The Higher Population Council will be participating in the upcoming Sixteenth meeting of the National Population Councils and Committees of the Arab States, organized by the Population Policies and Expatriates and Migration Department, Social Affairs Division, League of Arab States in cooperation with UNFPA and ESCWA from 16-18th March 2015. 
 
The Council will give a presentation on its role in the implementation of the Cairo Declaration and the priorities of the Fifteenth meeting of the National Population Councils and Committees. This meeting will be attended by about a 100 participant ranging from  Governmental officials, heads of National Councils and Committees, representatives from the United Nations Development Fund, ESCWA , a number of experts and international and regional organizations concerned with population issues.
 
The meeting will follow up on the Cairo Declaration of 2013 and the creation of a mechanism to activate it as a unified Arab document  developing  a program of work for the  countries so as to place population and development issues beyond 2014 on its agenda.
 
It is expected that a set of recommendations will come out aimed at encouraging  the participants to begin the implementation of the 2013 Cairo Declaration and to assess progress made in its activation and implementation within the following priorities: the overall impact of Demographic changes and in particular forced migration resulting from conflicts, wars and occupation on development in the Arab region; with emphasis on the importance of Arab youth empowerment; promoting equality, women and girls empowerment and reproductive health.
 
It is expected that other recommendations will be identified in relation to determining the roles of the National Population Councils and Committees in identifying development policies; their  activation and measurement, the promotion of awareness and knowledge on the importance of integrating population and development priorities in the agenda of the 48th  session of the  UN Commission on Population and Development, meeting in April 2015.
 
The meeting agenda includes several topics centered on the current developments in determining the final list of the goals for the post-2015 development; and the population dimension which includes:  the integration of population and development priorities in the development agenda beyond 2015, the frame of reference and activation of the 2013 Cairo Declaration on Population and Development on the National level, and sharing experiences on the role of population councils in the inclusion of Population in the National planning process.
